Why Did Mary Believe Gabriel?

The Holy Spirit has gripped me with 5 words this Christmas season,

“Blessed is she who believed.”

The Holy Spirit said those things in Luke 1 about Mary, through Elizabeth. God was looking for a human to partner with him in His plan. Not only did God want someone who was willing and available, but one who believed. But what did Mary believe? And why?

Mary believed

  • God’s plan to make Israel a holy nation.

  • It was pride that kept Israel from doing things God’s way.

  • God needed humble humans to fulfill his promises to Israel.

Because of her faith in God’s Word and her fear of God, Mary believed the angel Gabriel.

Holy expectation and persistent trust left no room for unbelief.

She waited. She listened. She learned. She longed. She prayed. She believed.

I picture Mary learning as much as she can in her early teenage years, filled with a holy hunger to know God and see Him move powerfully in her nation. Her prayers and pondering pulled her right into His heart and His storyline. And remember, He also trusted her.

“Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord” (Luke 1:45).

What did Gabriel tell her that God promised to fulfill?

“And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end. . . . As He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed forever.” Luke 1:31-33, 55

Some of those promises are fulfilled, some are not. Currently, Jesus is not reigning over Israel on the throne of David in Jerusalem. If we want to be prepared for the second coming of Christ, we must understand that God's end-time plan is clear in the Scriptures. Mary understood much from the holy scriptures. She believed because she had confidence in God's Word and ways and was willing to to be used for His glory.

Now is the time to search the 150 chapters in the Bible that reveal God's end-time plan so that we can have confidence that Jesus will

  • bring salvation to Israel and rule from Jerusalem

  • bring in a global harvest

  • lead a victorious, fearless, praying Church who are in love with Him and trust His leadership

  • release global revival in the context of the great tribulation (that will be the Church's greatest hour on the earth)

  • return as a jealous Bridegroom to rescue His bride

  • return as a powerful King to overthrow the Antichrist and his wicked governments

  • return as a righteous Judge to cleanse the earth of evil and reward the saints as they rule with Him

It is time to prepare for the coming of the Lord.

He wants us to be confident in His Word and ways.

He wants us to believe as Mary did.
