Turning the Hearts of the Parents to the Children
I am looking for men and women who will build up a wall of righteousness in our land on behalf of our children. I am looking for fathers and mothers who will humble themselves before the Lord to fast and pray for the next generation. I believe that the Lord is waiting for us in this moment. This is our responsibility as Christian parents. We have much to gain, but we must do it His way. The 3rd reason why I am calling us to pray and fast together for 21 days is to have the hearts of men and women mercifully and resolutely turned to the young people with tenderness and affection.
Awaken to Action
We are at a crossroads and history seems to be swaying back and forth, like my 2 year old standing at the top of the stairs on his tippy-toes, waiting and watching to see who will spring to action. Who will stand up and grab history and direct it toward hope and assurance, rather than let it topple and create victims out of us all? You are in this story. We can shift history together.
A new era of hope awaits for our sons and daughters, but only if we fast and pray as the Scriptures instruct us. It is our responsibility to transfer all that is within us by fathering and mothering the next generation, in the natural and the spiritual. I believe the result of fasting with this biblical focus will be more than we can imagine. Our heavenly Father is waiting for men and women to pour themselves into young people for the glory of Jesus Christ. The first step for us to take is to pray and fast together.
Now is the time for action. We must understand the opportunity that lies before us and respond. With even faith the size of a mustard seed we can move barriers blocking the way forward for our sons and daughters. Elijah fasted and embraced the weakness that comes with it, but he trusted God. God changed Elijah’s heart for the purpose of the next generation.
Fast and Pray to Have Your Heart Turned to the Children
Elijah saw the fire of God fall from heaven (1 Kings 18). He saw God’s mighty power and justice released in response to Elijah’s prayers! Yet, God had more important things for Elijah. What would be more important than turning the hearts of the Israelites back to God and the prophets of Baal being destroyed? Leaving a legacy. Generational inheritance. Raising a son.
Elijah fasted 40 days and went up the mountain of God to meet with God, and to hear the voice of God. The power of the fast and the purpose of the whisper of God was to turn the heart of Elijah to serve the next generation. Elijah came down the mountain with a fatherly heart, tenderly and resolutely positioned to give everything to a son, Elisha. We must hear God’s heart in this truth and embrace it.
“See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes. He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the children to their parents; or else I will come and strike the land with total destruction.” Malachi 4:5-6
“And he [John the Baptist] will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous - to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” Luke 1:17
If My People Whom Are Called by My Name…
I believe that if we humble ourselves before the Lord with prayer and fasting, the Lord will powerfully transform our hearts in ways we never imagined so that our children benefit gloriously. We must prioritize equipping the next generation with everything we can offer, rather than having an attitude of “They’ll have to figure it out just like we did.” It will be their voices that shake the nations. Let’s show them mercy and faith in God!
Afflicting ourselves with fasting (an act of humbling ourselves) is the first step toward God hearing us and healing us, according to 2 Chronicles 7:14. God wants to heal our land but it starts with humbling ourselves and aligning our hearts with His. Repent! For the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!
The heart of our heavenly Father desires reconciliation, restoration, and redemption. He created family (Ephesians 3:14). He wants to see parents’ hearts turned toward children. He also wants to see children’s hearts turned toward their parents in honour and submission. This needs to happen in natural families, but also spiritual ones as Elijah poured his life into Elisha (not a natural son). Jesus did that with twelve spiritual sons, His disciples.
We will see the turning of hearts when we see adults giving their time, energy, money, stories, and everything they can to young people for the glory of Jesus Christ. This will be a sign for preparing the way for the return of the Lord to rule the nations from the earth forever and ever.
