Breakthrough Comes When We Fast and Pray
I was angry. My daughter had a problem that was frustrating her and me. She had warts. We had them frozen at the doctor's office, put the medicine on them at home, and prayed: Nothing seemed to work, they did not go away. In fact, they were multiplying! Think about a family member or friend who is suffering on a smaller scale (warts) or larger scale (depression, suicidal thoughts, addiction, etc.). We become angry and frustrated because we want freedom and life for our loved ones.
At the time in March when I became angry over my daughter's bothersome warts, I told her,
"I'm going to pray and fast one day a week and take authority over those warts by the blood of Jesus and come into agreement with God's Word that you are healed and restored in your spirit, soul, and body and I believe they will go away and never come back."
I practiced with her how she could pray on her own as well.
Three nights ago, I asked her if she had ever asked God to do something impossible and she said "yes," I said "what?"
She said, "take my warts away, and look - they're gone!" She showed me her hands and I jumped up and said, "WHAT??! I didn't know that, Praise Jesus!" The discomfort of fasting food weekly so that I could see breakthrough come in my daughter's life was worth it!
Breakthrough comes when we fast and pray with faith that the living God, Jesus Christ, will respond.
I grew in confidence to persevere in praying and fasting with expectation when God told me to go to page 77 of a book by Dutch Sheets, Authority in Prayer. I found a story of a woman who God had sent to remind the author that he really has authority to close and open doors in the spirit based on Isaiah 22:22. He goes on to tell his story when he was a child of taking authority over the warts on his body according to God's Word and he was healed of them over a period of 6 weeks.
The verses from Isaiah 22 resonated with me because a year ago, I asked the Lord "Who am I?" and Isaiah 22:20 came to mind. The verses tell of the authority of one king being passed to another king who was summoned specifically by the Lord to serve as a father to the people. But the emphasis was in verse 22, "I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David; what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open."
Jesus said something similar when he said, "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven" (Matthew 16:19).
I am learning more and more about how to use the authority God has given me. Isaiah 58, Joel 2, and Daniel 10 reveal much insight about how fasting positions us in humble weakness to receive what the Holy Spirit wants to release or reveal. Joel 2 shows us the corporate model of fasting because of who God is.
Daniel 10 teaches us that extended fasting inaugurates war in the heavens and angel armies are released to bring breakthrough against the forces of wickedness that rule under the god of this age (Satan) (2 Cor. 4). Daniel's breakthrough was receiving revelation from heaven and there was breakthrough when the wicked king of Persia, Cyrus, made righteous decrees - that was a result of angels pushing back the demons who were whispering in the king's ear trying to influence him in his decision making. This is real.
Isaiah 58 clarifies that God wants his people to fast so that chains of injustice are broken, oppressive yokes or burdens are shattered, the bound are set free, and the result is generosity toward the poor, physical needs met in the community, healing and righteousness increased in the land, and even the Lord's glory - His very presence will visit the people! God's word says that after we fast this way with these motives,
"Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday." Isaiah 58:9-10
I'm calling fathers and mothers to a 21-day Daniel fast because I want to see Westman's children and youth living confidently as sons and daughters of God, free of oppression and depression, experiencing breakthrough from broken relationships into restored and wholesome relationships, and without torment of suicidal thoughts.
"The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God" 2 Cor. 4:4. Believers must rise up in faith and bow down in humility. I believe the Lord will respond as we come into agreement with His ways, will, and word.
We will meet at Calvary Temple at 7pm on Saturday October 24 to worship Jesus, declare who He is, and to humble ourselves before Him. I believe this is how we will gain breakthrough. Join me!
